Precisely.  I see this sort of thing a lot in logistics technical publishing.

Just FYI:

1.  Notepad ++ is a better alternative.  It color codes by syntax (XML  
is built in) and that is great for quick edits and even very long  
sessions.  I use it for most of my work.

2. If you can, a harness that wraps say, system.xml, and gives you  
access to the validator and xsl engines, plus some utilities for  
things such as selecting the file, setting different doctypes,  
converting from Word, etc.  is a handy thing to have and a good VB  
programming exercise.   Sure, there are good tools out there but if  
you need to, that is a perfectly workable solution and a good tool to  
have when you are working on the desktop.
