Re: XML Redux
Although the first step to improving XML usability on the Web may indeed
involve identifying some kind of subset, which is fine (though controversial
of course) but I don't think it stops there. I reckon it has to follow through
to including minimal instructions (or 'guidelines' or 'best practises' or a set
of 'implementation guides') for parsers of various kinds re the minimum
they need to do. For example the parser might need to have two modes,
one lax and one strict, to allow on one hand the parsing of the XML as text
ignoring any encoding 'errors' (like XML5, say) so that at least the parser
can read in the XML for certain uses (like correction of such 'errors' by
character escaping/replacing, etc) and on the other hand something which
focuses on parsing 'valid' XML. Guidelines may be needed for full-scale
offerings on one hand and minimal text-like parsing in code written by the
web developer or page author on the other. I think the purpose of Redux
XML or MicroXML or other subsets might be to ensure it is feasible to write
and implement such guidelines. If they don't make this feasible then maybe
subsets have no place. If it is feasible even without the subset(s) then again
maybe the subsets have no place.
