Good question, Dave - I guess my thought that was smaller change would
be *easier* to get implemented, but perhaps that is naive: ho-humness
could doom it. One thing I like about this incremental approach though
is that much of the benefit can be realized *only* with a new parser. I
know a parser is complicated, but with some of the complexity removed,
it would actually be much simpler to create a new one.

I don't know how easily major players could be enlisted, but I do know
that if nobody sticks their neck out, willing to make a mistake and
maybe look stupid, nothing will ever happen.

Coming from the publishing world, it seems to me there is an opportunity
to support whole new models of content delivery: on e-readers and other
mobile devices especially. Having a more compact syntax, and a simpler
parser and processing model should be attractive there, as David Lee and
others have attested.
