At the time, there was no way to separate the model from the view -- the
concept of datatyping a schema simply didn't exist. Believe me, it's
what everyone wanted.

That said, there's no reason the substantive work done in XLink/XPointer
can't be re-used to represent a better relationship modelling, with the
presentation portions broken out to where they belong.
