Any XML editor worth its salt, e.g. Oxygen, will provide the same
level of comfort for any XML vocabulary, including you shopping list,
for which you provide a DTD or schema.

Be it your own custom "shopping list" vocabulary, or a just-released specification for which no authoring tools exist yet, or a specification that only you and maybe two other people in the world use. To me, it is one of the greatest values of XML that even in these situations, you can always open a text editor and create/edit the documents by hand.
