That's not always possible. Neither EXI nor Fast Infoset requires that. EXI in particular does perform better if you do have a schema. Note also that some of the "binary XML" formats are limited, e.g. do not support mixed content, or comments, or processing instructions. On the other hand, EXI is new - it's not yet a final Recommendation, we're still in the "call for implementations" phase. Give it six months or so and see what's happening.
