People don't "switch" from one technology to another. They adopt a new technology alongside the old, and they coexist for decades, running different applications. Most of the applications that I have seen using XML databases would never have been implemented in an RDBMS. They might previously have used free text databases, document management systems, operating system filestore, in some cases object databases.
