A quick reply to myself: after some googling I found a possible
solution: expose the http OPTIONS method at each resource.  It's
out-of-band in regard to the actual representation of the resource, but
it seems that this may be the way to go.

For example an OPTIONS ./State would return 

GET 
POST 
OPTIONS
