Sorry for seeing the glass half empty, but I would say validate the XML instance document against the schema. From a developer point of view, I fully understand the purpose of checking the input and have an understandable error message if input is not valid, but when I want to make tests files in order to be able to execute my code, it is always painful to have to enter all the fake data in order to pass that validation step :-). I think any XML designer should allow a "test mode" in its schemas in order not to have to fill all the XML data before being able to execute the code we want to test. It is a kind of checking a XML and let him pass if it is correct, so I think the proper statement is "against the schema", like a protection wall.
