In my article (something that got lost in Roger's precis) I did say that
this was appropriate for a workflow within an organisation, but might not be
the right approach when the process crosses organisation boundaries. (Though
it still might be, if there is one organisation that owns and operates the
process).

It does create a single point of failure, but databases can be engineered to
manage that. The benefit is that you get a high level of management
oversight of the operation of the process, for example it becomes much
easier to see how effectively the process is running in different parts of
the organisation - which (relating to the other thread) is rather useful if
you are going to start designing process improvements.
