I think another implicit quality of convention is that it is something that is arrived at over a time-period, if you argue that something is a convention, that is to say <emphasize>established</emphasize> by common practice, then it follows with good enough analysis of the communications of that community that you should be able to track when practices that are propounded as best by leading members of the community move to a state of being conventional.
