Generally an XML schema specifies the allowed contents of an XML instance quite precisely and adding additional elements or attributes to an XML instance will likely cause it to become invalid. However, you can specify what are called wildcards using xs:any and xs:anyAttribute which allow XML instances to include additional elements and attributes not explicitly specified in the schema. Such additional elements do have to occur where the xs:any declarations allow them, so in general, even with xs:any declarations, you can't add in elements just any where.
