Why not? I wouldn't want to generate all possible instances in the general case, but I would want that for some types of schemas. Still -- generation of "interesting instances" rather than trivial ones is very useful. For example, if you don't care about the value of simple types, but is interested in complex types (structure) generation of instances based on possible structures offered by a schema while the simple type data is being generated from some pre-prepared list of values -- seems, at least to me like a practical and extremely useful tool.
