Hi Jonathan: I agree with everything you said. I also like Stylus Studio and Oxygen. I like the graphical view of XML Spy - although it SPY annoys me because it does it's own thing with white space and I am pretty picky about how I want my files to look and don't like tools touching the white space. I consider XML Spy, Oxygen and Stylus Studio to be development tools and I wouldn't expose an author to these tools but would recommend XMetaL (Justsystems just bought XMetal), Epic or SernaText or other XML authoring tool, i.e., Framemaker + XML, depending on the environment. I am hoping that Justsystems purchase of XMetal will breath some life back into the product. For the last few years it has been like XMetaL didn't exist. Maybe you can have some influence with your company to add RelaxNG and Schematron support on Stylus Studio. I am finding that Schematron is becoming really popular and am writing a lot of Schematron these days. Oxygen, AFAIK, is the only industrial strength tool that supports Schematron.
