There are lots of ways to take that. But everytime someone says the web is the new operating system, I cringe a bit. MARCA put Netscape on the ropes with that approach. Web 2.0 smells of that same hype. The web is what it has always been: computers sending each other email a bit more conveniently than the old message boards did. The horse-drawn carriage ran at a speed that was suitable for the roads and the driving habits of the day. As horseless carriages were becoming automobiles (a branding game), the real requirements for safety and maintainability were just being realized. The efforts to get infrastructure in place varied by locale for understandable reasons. Some take a lot of credit for the web. Some seldom accept any blame because... personally, they don't care, so it becomes someone else's job to fix the mistakes and build a safer infrastructure. Autos didn't make Henry Ford a king; they made him rich, and in America, that's a lot more power. But it took Adolph Hitler and Dwight D. Eisenhower to get us an interstate system. len From: Didier PH Martin [mailto:martind@n...] Hello len, Len said: As I noted to O'Reilly, web 2.0 is to web 1.0 as the horseless carriage was to the automobile: none of the reliability of the horse and all of the discomfort of the carriage. Didier replies: Do you say this because of the low interactivity of some web site? What about the new ones using more the power of the clients?
