RE: Another Microsoft XML patent

interface concept patents
It was the link passed along
for explaining 'shape of software'.

As for viewpoints, that is whole discussion about the
notion of migrating away from a 2D interface to a
real-time 3D interface where the viewpoint object
organizes the interface, concepts, and so on. If
you like, we can split off a thread on that. This
is something I've been thinking about since the
late eighties when I realized that it was the
unifying concept for non-linear systems, user
interfaces, and conceptual vector models. I
presented a formula for that at an SGML conference
and documented it in a paper and an Appendix to
a US Navy IETM paper. Since then, with experience
in VRML and now X3D, it is clear to me that it
is the next generation and that retro designs
like XAML and XUL (which the US Navy MID is the
prototype for) are already behind the curve.

As typical, the bigCos and the kids are looking
in the wrong place. Innovation really is in the
tall grass waiting. The gamesters already know
this.
