How to distribute logic - what belongs in the database and in the middle tier -- 
is an ongoing debate.

The debate began when DBMS vendors (IBM, Informix, Oracle, Sybase) started
shipping SQL servers that embedded Java plug-ins in databases.

During a discussion we recorded at an XML conference, two software engineers
offerred diverse opinions. Hamish Reid's comments about this start four minutes
into the program. At the time, he worked for an SQL DBMS vendor. You'll also
hear Joe Weinstein, who represented the viewpoint of an application server
vendor.
