At a high level, isn't XAML simply the Microsoft equivalent of Mozilla's 
XUL, an XML-based language to describe ("declare") user interfaces, or 
are there other things that XUL does not have ?

Advantages I see (of both): the development of "smart clients" (between 
dumb clients of the browser era and heavy clients of the C/S era), which 
have the benefits of easy deployment (the application can be downloaded 
like an HTML page), but with the advantage of less roundtrips to the 
server and hence more interactivity and responsiveness.

In a nutshell, a way to move CPU back to the client (Windows).
