Even when the major vendors don't jump on an XML 
language, it can find its way into serious use. 
X3D continues slowly to gain serious applications 
even though it is from a non-W3C consortium and 
is standardized through ISO.  Perhaps the lack 
of good open alternatives is one factor.  Another 
is a community with a need that they will meet 
themselves using off-the-shelf standards and 
technologies.

Vendors can catch up when the market is worth 
their time and trouble.   To be trite, there 
are many paths up the mountain.
