No, as I said, you fake a declaration for undeclared elements. Something equivalent to <!ELEMENT foo ANY>. If you aren't doing any kind of validation, it can just be a list of element names that you've seen. I doubt that it would make much difference. Looking up the name is likely to take longer than checking that the characters are all name characters. -- Richard
