one 'unusual' but common use of schema is in WSDL by agents
to manufacture XML messages as well as consume them. WSDL 2.0
is supposedly schema language agnostic, though W3C schema is
the only normative language. i wonder how successful
assertive languages like Schematron are in constructing
messages?

another 'unusual' but common use is using the schema for a
language to examine a set of test XML documents and then report
upon test coverage.

so nothing very 'unconventional' there .. ho hum ..
