For example, SAP and Eclipse are not based on ISO standards. If programming languages such as C++ and SQL don't qualify, or standards for interfacing with the operating system (POSIX, CLI), then I'm unclear what you mean about success in the software field. The seminal work on C++, POSIX and CLI happened before ISO became the standardsmaker, but that's not unusual. Most people evaluate ISO in terms of how well it does the job of establishing standards, not how successful it's been as a technology incubator.
