RE: RE: Why a "general" solution? (was: RE: XML Bina
I've stumbled across the following blog entry that comments on an
entry in my own blog[1] on the subject of XML/ASN.1 mixed-use:
http://sati.weblogs.us/archives/004543.html

Manoj Sati says: "I once worked on a system software that processed a
ton of XML ( all P2P exchanges were XML based ). The intention was the
ability to look at the wire format cleanly. Needless to say, the
performance left much to be desired. Changing XML to a proprietary
binary format worked wonders."

This is only one of many "testimonials" that could be collected that
indicate that in at least "high-volume" XML applications, the
conversion of XML to a compressed, fast binary format is a useful
thing to do. Given that the volume of information available on and
exchanged on the Internet is growing rapidly, it seems to me that
there will be more and more applications that find that they can
benefit from mixed XML/ASN.1 architectures in the future. It makes
little sense for each of these projects to work in isolation and in
isolation of the forums of the XML community. Interop would be best
served by coordination and cooperation between these communities.
