Yes.  From what I gather from Allette's Nick Carr, conference attendees 
were pretty much
split orthogonally into those interested in multi-publishing (XML, SGML, 
PDF, version control,
pagination systems, WWW) and those interested in Service Oriented 
Architectures (banks,
etc).   So they split the XML conference into two with different 
focuses, Open Publish and
OASIS Open Standards; the conferences are each smaller but attendees 
report them as being
higher quality (for having less extraneous and vendor material, and 
easier human networking). 
I don't know if the European and American conferences will face the same 
thing.
