Thanks for the clarification.  I thought you meant that I was inferring
that the X3D binary RFP didn't allow for a pluggable decoder.  Certainly, 
it could potentially have the same issues for unknown format variants 
where those are used as textures (even video could be a texture) but 
does not at this time.

By 'streaming media players' I meant apps like media player, quicktime
player, real 
player etc. all of which support download of decoders for unknown format
variants. 
Not everything has the same requirements as X3D for the number of binary
formats it 
is considered desirable to support.
