One can model an individual as an aggregate set of semiotes (autonomous sign processors). This is the model we posed for HumanML. While there is a clear boundary between individual and environment, one could model the individual as an internal set of negotiating agents. It is one reason that emotions have emerged in recent years as a focus of study for cyberneticists. The attempt is to understand the role of emotions in the negotiations of internal agents as they handle external agents in a situation (another way to say the environment is a sign processor). Keep in mind, this is not meant to be a decription of the human mind, soul or body as a complex, but a means to model the communication behaviors of humans. So if the model is a scaling model one can consider the sign processor from the simplest internals to the environment itself as a sort of recursive model where there are scaling boundaries (eg, the boundary between the individual and the society (internal and external environments) and that because of the signs that are received and sent, is semi-permeable (a messaging system that enables modification of the semantic or better, overloads the sign but that requires a means to recognize different meanings and converge on the effective one for a given communication/transaction). This is not dissimilar to the notion that in a pipeline, schemas are modified/transformed for effective use at each stage and in each location. That is, schemas are emergent controls. Incorporate feedback for the semiotes where protocols are the messages across boundaries (both scale boundaries and agent boundaries), and the system is dynamic and has the potential to be NLDS. The agent is modifying the environmental schema, and the environment is modifying the agent's schemas. As above; so below. len -----Original Message----- From: Bullard, Claude L (Len) "We as autonomous agents ALSO assign meaning to things without negotiating with any other autonomous agents. In other words, the significance of things can be developed (enhanced, whatever) without negotiations." Another point of view on this is that assignment of signs without negotiation with other 'autonomous agents' is a form of negotiation with the environment, that is, the environment behaves semiotically as well. It is an agent. When using semiotics, one should consider it a model of process for assignment (both identity and sign).
