At some point I will try to handle the compact syntax natively within libxml2. Also yesterday I got the opposite request, i.e. tools to go from the XML syntax to the compact one. Looking at the spec I think it's should be doable with an XSLT stylesheet (the handling of the import might be nasty though), did someone tried to do this yet ?
