Dear Murali:

I think the semantic web not only needs ontologies, but metadata. Sometimes metadata is written in XML documents not in RDF because it needs to be validated for syntax.  For example geospatial metadata (e.g. FGDC,  ISO 19115 or GML) are mostly written and checked with XML schemas (e.g. I haven't seen any RDF encoding of these standards). So we have to warranty in some way  the consistency of vocabulary use when descrying web resources ( for example watershed names, land use, station descriptions. methods …). I was thinking that vocabularies used in metadata could be controlled by ontologies in the semantic web. 

Search engines I think do not need xml schemas..
