Because, the other half of the project is to hook this into the guts of Cocoon as the internal caching mechanism (which implies that at the very least all the pieces have to be Open Source, and ideally there would be a cross parser API (hint, hint))... And if that's not enough, the other half of the project (three halves you ask? It's a big project...) is that the data originates from multiple legacy relational databases that are already hanging around.
