An idea about permathreads

An idea about permathreads
I'm sorry if this is a permathread.

Maybe I'm not the only one here who's afraid to raise new topics of fear
that someone will exclaim "We've heard it before!" In the long history of
this list, there have been lots of useful discussions that are now
forgotten and hard to find. Especially so with the current search engine at
OASIS.

The task of bringing these useful discussions up to the surface again is a
task for many people working together. Therefore, I think there should be
an xml-dev wiki. Here are some ideas I have about it:

- The first page should have a fairly limited number of topics showing.
Broad topics like stylesheets, links, namespaces, W3C, schemas,
syndication, multimedia and so on. Each of these may be divided hierarchially.

- Every topic has 1+ self-appointed expert(s). The initial task of those
experts is to start digging in the archive and write summaries. Other
people may help to add things, thanks to the wiki medium. Later on, it's
just a matter of keeping the topic area as useful and comprehensive as
possible.

- The scope of the wiki as a whole, should be limited to things discussed
here, not about learning XML and other standards.

- The URL to the wiki should be included in the footer of every message, so
that it's easy to find for everyone. By time, the wiki will become a
natural part of the xml-dev institution.

Even divided on several people, it's a big task. If it's too much, we could
let it grow slowly by adding summaries of new discussions only. But that's
a big compromise of course.
