Considering actual user needs, striving for simplicity, basing your design on mathematical principles, etc. are powerful repressive forces. If such considerations had held back WXS, we might not today enjoy interleave for dummies, object orientation without objects, or even non-commutative set union, the mighty engine that drives XQuery validation, and makes possible the typeswitchlottery feature.
