Not helpful to whom? I'm very happy that the RELAX NG community proceeded with their work despite the publication of a 'Recommended' specification. DSDL's continuing work strikes me as the most likely area for technical progress in the whole of XML. Their example seems worthy of emulation - perhaps effort should be directed toward alternatives rather than to comments on specifications which appear unlikely to change their fields for the better.
