This is an overstatement. In W3C, for example, the intensely commercial working groups such as XML Schema and XQuery are still commented on by intensely non-commercial (in the narrow sense) groups such as Internationalization and Web Accessibility. And vice versa. In ISO, it is group-by-group: the SC34 group has long been dominated by users rather than vendors, and the 1 nation = 1 vote system that ISO uses reduces the feasibility of committee stacking. At OASIS, a group like the RELAX NG group is hardly dominated by commercial interests: I think all the implementations of RELAX NG are either Open Source or freeware binaries Cheers Rick Jelliffe P.S.Is it too long a bow to draw to say that the relationship between companies and standards bodies is sometimes like nations and treaty organizations? For US substitute MS.
