Who Will Use It? (WAS RE: Transactional Integrity of Services

transactional integrity
Just a nit ...

"The Semantic Web is rapidly becoming a
reality through the development of Semantic Web markup languages"

I wonder if that is true.

The web is a reality because of content at the endpoints, not
the languages in which they are coded. Languages are just
stuff. Content is the stuffing. I say this only because
over and over again in the years I've worked with markup,
I've seen these breathless announcements for markup languages
only to watch them die because the owners of the content
were not interested. It is similar to the problems of
volunteer groups who attempt to create standards without
the support of the industries that would use them. It
isn't a chicken or egg problem either; it is a problem
of who has the business and are they interested in opening
it up. Often, they aren't. It isn't use cases but real
users that make or break a language spec or a content standard.

You make great points regarding semantics. I would recommend that you
track the progress of DAML-S [1], an emerging DAML+OIL ontology for
Semantic Web Services.

Quotes from [1]:

DAML-S is an emerging DAML+OIL ontology for Semantic Web Services. It is
a collaborative effort between BBN Technologies, Carnegie Mellon
University, Nokia Research Center, SRI International, Stanford
University, and Yale University. The Semantic Web is rapidly becoming a
reality through the development of Semantic Web markup languages such as
DAML+OIL, and these markup languages enable the creation of arbitrary
domain ontologies (such as DAML-S) that support the unambiguous
description of Web content.
