Speaking for myself only (a firmly committed "doc-head"), I'm not at all opposed to the idea of datatyping. I am, however, opposed to the way that it's realized in W3C XML Schema, and the fact that this particular type system continues to infect otherwise perfectly-good specs like XPath. I'd be perfectly happy with functionality like the LTDR and DAFE facilities of HyTime II (with a lighter-weight binding mechanism and some of the cruft excised).
