Wow. Memories of the author as a young XLink evangelist, circa 2000.

That was a presentation I gave at a very Microsoft-centric show. I
managed to convince the (30-person) audience that XLink's capabilities
were very cool, and got some great and thoughtful questions, though no
one there thought it had a chance of making it past Microsoft's
indifference.

Much to my surprise, my (20-person) W3C XML Schema audience was far less
enthusiastic (about the project as a whole, not the details), but
everyone there thought WXS was inevitable. I left that show pretty
confused, I'll admit.

The slides that went with the article are available (in very slightly
updated form) at:
http://simonstl.com/articles/xlink/

For those who don't want to play with the Word attachment Marlon sent,
the same information is available at:
http://www.xml.com/pub/2000/05/03/browserchart/index.html

As far as browser support for XLink, my understanding is that
Mozilla/Netscape still supports (with updates to more recent specs)
XLink simple links, while Opera still uses CSS for linking. That makes
it possible to teach Opera about simple XLinks, in any case. Internet
Explorer, so far as I can tell, remains blissfully unaware of XLink.

I covered some workarounds for dealing with linking in the three
browsers at:
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2000/05/03/msie/index.html

I don't believe that any of the browsers supports XPointer explicitly.

There are a number of other tools which support XPointer, notably libxml
and 4Suite, but they're aimed more at developers than end-users.
