Opera continues to make huge advances (it's been my primary browser for years now). Mozilla is looking great....and it might prompt even more "thicker client" innovation since it's open source and thus can be easily extended. Much of the innovation comes from small shops or even individuals....and low or no cost browser options become attractive for those developers as a basis for further innovation. Good business models are rarely based on technology (note: I said good ones, which means sustainable, profitable, etc...). Technology in this regard is a distraction. What drives business models is solutions to problems. If a customer has a problem that needs solving, then it's only a matter of determining the benefit of solving that problem...then comparing that to the cost of the solution. If the former is smaller than the latter (in aggregate) then you have a business model you can fly. Technology, proprietary or open source, only partially affects the costfactors....not the problem or the benefits of solving such.
