That data model is set forth at: > http://www.w3.org/XML/Datamodel.html Actually, if you look at the referring page http://www.w3.org/XML/notes.html it seems that that Datamodel is part of an abandoned project to make a strawman simplified XML. Hence the "default attribute" section at the end has stubs on using an <?xml?> PI to hold default values for attributes. It has the note in red "It dates from 1997 and is not currently maintained. " The referring page itself is in the Research Notes section of the http://www.w3.org/XML page. It is research (exploring and hacking ideas) and does not present itself as being normative in any way. Contrast this to the Infoset recommendation. I guess if anyone has links to that page treating the data model as being official, they need to (be asked to) alter their links. (Incendentally, this is one reason why Ted Nelson does not like the page approach to hypertext: his hypertext vision was more a system of embedding quotations in which the original document was still accessible: that way it was easy to figure out the context of some text and see if it had been misconstrued. Pages may rely on introductory material on previous pages, which will be missed during normal reading of a page. ) Cheers Rick Jelliffe
