The use of XML for what Joe was proposing is unimportant although it makes certain things easier. What I consider the the most salient issues to deal with in the proposed problem space doesn't benefit that much from the choice of XML over HTML even. As for my opinion as to value of XML, here's a quote by me from Elliote Rusty Harold's quote archives[0] "S-expressions have been able to do what most of use XML for for decades. The primary benefit of XML is not the syntax nor any other technical reasons but the fact that for once most of the software industry is agreeing on a common data interchange format across all levels. One that satisfies the needs of the data heads, the document heads and the in-betweeners." So, Yes, XML is a crucial component to what we are doing.
