xpath1 scheme
I've just published an IETF Internet-Draft that defines an xpath1()
scheme for use inside the XPointer Framework.

The I-D is available at:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-stlaurent-xpath-frag-00.txt

For those who aren't fond of huge amounts of whitespace, an HTML version
is available at:
http://simonstl.com/ietf/draft-stlaurent-xpath-frag-00.html

The abstract states:
--------------------
This document specifies an xpath1() scheme for use in XPointer-based
fragment identifiers. This scheme, like other XPointer Framework
schemes, is designed primarily for use with the XML Media Types
defined in RFC 3023, to identify locations within a given XML
representation of a resource. The xpath1() scheme uses XPath 1.0
syntax.
--------------------

Later on, the Draft notes:
--------------------
The xpath1() scheme strikes a balance between the simple
implementation but limited functionality of shorthand pointers and
the element() scheme, and the complex implementation but great
capabilities of the xpointer() scheme. Perhaps more importantly, it
strikes that balance using processing capabilities that are already
widely deployed.
---------------------

Future drafts will include examples, but I suspect the readers of this
list know what XPath 1.0 expressions look like.

This Internet-Draft has no connection to the W3C XLink WG except insofar
as it builds on the XPointer Framework and uses other W3C work as
