I agree. SOAP over HTTP seems to me to be an abuse of HTTP. At the
very least SOAP should use a different port.

However I'm a consumer in this regard. I don't control both ends of the
connection. What I'm hoping for is a viable alternative that service
providers will want to set up. Web Services have gained a lot of traction
because it is easy (probably too easy) to create, and providers assume
that investing in Web Services will pay off in the long run because Microsoft
is behind it.
