or maybe in many cases you could do away with the API's altogether?

look at XSLT, a complete programming language that _is_ XML and thus
doesn't need an API. XSLT has it's own shortcomings, especially if you try
to use it as a procedural language substitute, but the paradigm of writing
XML processing logic _in XML_ is, in my opinion, very powerful indeed.

I believe the same approach could be used to create an object-oriented
procedural language, which (as by chance..) is what i've been busying
myself with lately. If you're interested, the work i've done so far on
creating a spec and compiler/interpertor can be seen here ->>

early days still, but my feeling is there's huge potential in this field
for all types of XML development.
