Why do you want to escape? I am proud of having an SGML background. This has been a fun party for a long time with lots of nice and creative people. Frack! Who could ask for more? It isn't strange. Pioneers in the markup field worked for some number of years to plan standards for hypermedia based on markup systems. From the perspectives of their zeitgeist, they worked out solutions. The web design, particularly the design of HTML and the web presentation browsing system, is a class of hypertext system. The original Hytime work starts with a similar class of system. Think of it as the requirements for the specification of a system to be built. As work progressed, they discovered by research into existing systems and building others, some common problems. Again, from their own perspective, the created solutions. It is a decade on into the development of web hypermedia systems, and for various reasons, markup is the central data model. That one should be discovering similar requirements and that these should have similar solutions should not surprise anyone. It is no different than exploring a country new to the explorer, but common to its natives. After awhile, a merging of skills, names, techniques, etc. emerge in a common technical culture. That is why some refer to XML by "SGML as practiced". Too much is made of the accomplishments of XML and not enough of the community as a whole. I believe that to be a personal thing for some. In effect, as said often before, the same people are pursuing overlapping visions now just as the have for over three decades in some cases, and one in others. But it's all markup, a data model technology. Duh. len -----Original Message----- From: Mike Champion [mailto:mc@x...] And I'm not by any means suggesting that we admit the error of our ways and study the SGML Bible as the source of fundamental truth. I'm just marvelling at how this damn thing is sortof a strange attractor that we keep circling around, but can't escape.
