I could swear that MSFT types are all about Web Services given the amount of Microsoft names that adorn the W3C standards[0,1] and the various GxA initiatives by Microsoft[2,3].

If you want to criticize Joel's perspective you should perhaps look at the fact that his background is in platform specific , shrink wrapped software and thus the problems distributed application developers face have never been the same as his.

There's a fundamental difference between then and now. For the first
time, *everyone* is providing the same distributed systems
infrastructure. As an application person, I don't have to get a JRE on
every machine, or put a Corba/IIOP engine on the desktop, etc. The
barrier to deployment of distributed applicaitons -- and soon, secure
distributed applications -- is nearly zero. That's an important first.

Joel, an MSFT type, either doesn't see or doesn't appreciate this.
