RE: Article: Keeping pace with James Clark

RE: Article: Keeping pace with James Clark
The politics of meaning become more evident
every day. The arguments about namespace
dereferencing are made so often here and
elsewhere, I don't think they have to be
repeated. The day is too short for
XML omphaloskepsis.

My point is simple: keep namespaces
and the infoset out of the core. These
are not simply syntax.

I liked his reference to sgmls. He is right
about the redoing of ARCSGML being a seminal
event. OTOH, ARCSGML had better error messages.
There are some things lawyers do better than
programmers. :-)

This is your basis for calling Clark's assertions inconsistent? If every
distant contingency of any set of statements were to be considered in judging
whether those statements were consistent, then there would be no such thing as
a set of statements that are consistent.

In other words, I think you're splitting hairs quite needlessly.

If you have this argument to make about namespace dereferencing, you'll have a
stronger case just making the argument. The way you introduced it just makes
it too easy to write off as a quiddity.
