As I understand it, you will not need a schema to use XQuery, but of course
you will not be able to use types as part of a query definition.  You will
only be able to use names to identify what you want to retrieve, which may
very well be fine.  That's what we do with xslt now, but XQuery will do more
of it more conveniently (I hope it will be more convenient).

There has been some discussion here that different data type systems should
be pluggable (for simple types), but if that ever happens it seems that it
will not be any time soon.
