I'm not sure if that matters. I suspect the problem is with the MIME
type for the original XML file.

You may not have to change the global server MIME type registry:

I don't think that the W3C is always fastidious in registering their
types in a timely fashion but that should change one day.

You should be able to at least figure out what they are delivering your
XML as. For instance the "wget" program tells you. Or you could write a
small program. Perhaps Mozilla has a "properties dialog" that will tell
you the MIME type of the current page.
