This to me is a better situation than W3C XML Schema
being accepted as the only choice based solely on the source.

Besides, you don't need James Clark to tell you that W3C XML
Schema is hard, incomplete, inadequate and somehow not right.
You can come to that conclusion on your own simply by reading
the REC.
