Re: Come On, DTD, Come On! Thoughts on DSDL Part 9

dtd format
(I have split the response into two separate emails so as to not
cross-post; this is the answer to the XML-Dev mail list)

Yes, this part is at a formative, idea-collecting stage.

Thank you for the input!

Yes, but early thoughts are that we don't want to "break" DTDs, so we will
look at trying to come up with conventions of use of existing DTD syntax
before introducing new syntax and/or declarations.

NOTATION declarations come to mind, but XML NDATA entity declarations do
not have data attribute specifications the way that SGML NDATA entity
declarations did.

However, we are collecting use-cases at this point and will begin proposing
solutions when we think we have a representative collection of needs. It
would be a shame to begin standardizing ways of doing things before we know
what everyone would like to see.

The home page for the DSDL project is http://dsdl.org ... it is a project
of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34/WG 1 and, as such, membership right now is by
members of the national body committee of each participating country.

For those who are unaware, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34/WG 1 is responsible for SGML
and the annexes to SGML that are compatible with W3C XML 1.0.

ALL INPUT IS WELCOME! Committee members will respond to your comments,
John, on the public comment list that you posted to at
dsdl-comment@d... that has a (close to real-time) public archive.

Anyone with use-cases for what they would like to see in a pipelined
validation framework and family of international standards, please pass on
your needs to us!

Thanks again, John, for the early contribution!
