I'm not surprised when W3C XML Schema comes in for criticism on xml-dev, especially if I happen to be talking. I've been very surprised to see the level of criticism W3C XML Schema has faced over the last week or so, not to mention the number of forums in which I've encountered it. I put together a weblog entry today covering some of it: http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/1528 The more exciting part, which I think is fuelling much of this activity as people realize that "it doesn't _have_ to be W3C XML Schema", is the rise of RELAX NG. It's exciting to me to read people's blogs and see the "aha" moment where they start reading RELAX NG and realize that it's easy as well as capable. This is a fascinating community, one where complaints often lead to code, and code that sees widespread use. I'm proud to be a part of a community where debate can lead to change, and where technical excellence can make a difference. I have to admit that this is the only technical community in which I've participated which has a large core of people who feel they have the capacity to make real change, not merely to follow a group of leaders and periodically heckle them. However the battles over schema play out (I'm betting on a long period of multiple options), the creative capacities and amazing diversity of this community make it a real standout. I doubt we've even begun to figure out how best to use markup, but I bet we'll get there. Simon St.Laurent "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better." - Emile Coue
